Burj Khalifa – One of the key tourist places in Dubai, is a marvel of architectural genius of 21st century. It was known as Burj Dubai before it’s inauguration, is a mega skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Burj Khalifa is the tallest structure in the world with the total height of 829.8m (2,722 ft) and a roof height of 828m (2,717 ft). Also, it is an example of international cooperation, symbolic beacon of progress, and an emblem of the new, dynamic and prosperous Middle East.

Wind Tunnel Testing

Did you know? Over 40 wind tunnel tests were conducted on Burj Khalifa to examine the effects the wind would have on the tower and its occupants. Also, the temporary conditions during the construction stage were tested with the tower cranes to ensure safety at all times.

Burj Khalifa height

It is the tallest building in the world with an architectural height of 2716.5 feet or 828.0 meters. Its occupied height (height of the floor occupied by people) is 1918 feet or 584.5 meters. Its total height measured from its tip is 2723 feet or 829.8 meters.

Over 1,000 pieces of art from prominent Middle Eastern and international artists adorn Burj Khalifa and the surrounding Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard. Many of the pieces were specially commissioned by Emaar to be a tribute to the spirit of global harmony.

Time to Construct

Did you know? The building was proposed in 2003; however, construction work started in 2004 and was completed in 2010. Over 45,000 m3 of concrete, weighing more than 110,000 tonnes were used to construct the concrete and steel foundation. Also, it took as much as  22 million man-hours with around 12,000 workers.

World Records

The tower also holds world records for: ‘tallest free standing building’, ‘highest occupied floor’, ‘highest number of stories’, ‘longest travel distance elevators’, ‘tallest service elevator’ and ‘second highest outdoor observatory deck’.

Burj Khalifa floors

There are 163 floors located above the ground and it has only one floor located below the ground. It has 58 functional elevators that run at a top speed of 10 meters per second. The tower boast 2957 parking spaces, 304 hotels and 900 apartments.

Burj Khalifa Architecture

The architecture features a triple-lobed footprint, an abstraction of the Hymenocallis flower. The tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. The modular, Y-shaped structure, with setbacks along each of its three wings provides an inherently stable configuration for the structure and provides good floor plates for residential. Twenty-six helical levels decrease the cross section of the tower incrementally as it spirals skyward.

The interiors are designed by the Chicago based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and was led by award-winning designer Nada Andric. Also, the interiors were inspired by local culture while staying mindful of the building’s status as a global icon and residence.

Aluminium Usage

Total aluminium used in the tower weighs as much as 5 A380 aircraft. And, total concrete used in the tower weighs as much as 100,000 elephants.
